International Women's Day and Women's History Month events

On March 8th 2022, we will be celebrating International Women's Day and the entire month is also dedicated to Women's History. We have a range of events happening throughout the month that are female-led and some events that are dedicated to remembering the roles that women have played throughout history as well as library displays celebrating female authors and female characters.

Online Florence Boot and Philanthropy Tickets £3. Florence was the Jersey girl who married Jesse Boot, of Boots the Chemist, in 1886. Florence Rowe would become Lady Trent and, after she and Jesse settled in Jersey in the 1920s, one of the Island’s best-known benefactors, following on from her philanthropic work in Nottingham. Southwell Library Sarah Ward a.k.a Rhiannon Ward Tickets £3. Sarah Ward is the author of four critically acclaimed crime novels featuring DC Connie Childs, set in the evocative Derbyshire Peak District. As Rhiannon Ward, she has also written The Quickening – a powerful gothic mystery. Her latest book, The Shadowing, is set in Southwell. Join Sarah for a discussion about her novels, her passion for crime writing and lots more. Thursday 10 March, 2pm.
Kirkby-in-Ashfield Library The Case of the Late Cook: A Murder Mystery with Kate Ellis Tickets £3. Crime writer Kate Ellis presents a 1930s murder mystery in which the audience must play the detective. Lady Carwood's new cook has been found dead in her kitchen, killed with one of her meat skewers. Who killed the cook and why? Join crime writer Kate Ellis for an hour of murder, mayhem and fun when you can play the detective and help bring the killer to justice. Thursday 17 March, 1:30pm.
Newark Library Death at the Dig: A Murder Mystery with Kate Ellis Tickets £3. Join Kate Ellis the author of the phenomenally popular DI Wesley Peterson series as she introduces a 1920s murder mystery in which the audience must play the detective. Eminent archaeologist Professor Digson has been murdered and the murder weapon is a statue of an Egyptian god. But who killed the professor and why? Thursday 17 March, 7pm.
Mansfield Central Library Lady Arbella Stuart, The Queen That Never Was Tickets £3. Elizabethan historian, David Templeman tells the story of Bess of Hardwick’s granddaughter Arbella, niece to Mary Queen of Scots, who was brought up with the sole intention of being crowned Queen after Elizabeth I. This compelling tale of exploitation, politics and religion follows Arbella from her confined childhood, largely at Hardwick Hall, to a dramatic finale in one of the most romantic escape stories in history! Mansfield Central Library International Women's Day display and activities Mansfield Library is celebrating International Women’s Day by displaying some of their empowering stock. They have also created an area where people can pick out activities suggested on the International Women's Day website and have asked the customers them to show us what they create by tagging us on Facebook. Stapleford Library Break the Bias Exhibition The Broxtowe Women’s Project are displaying their poetry and photographic artwork at Stapleford Library. The exhibition has built up from a project that the group developed with the National Justice Museum and its aim is to create an opportunity to use women’s artwork to continue important conversations. The exhibition also features the “110 White Butterflies” window display, made to symbolise the number of women who were killed by domestic violence in 2020. On now until March 24th
Various Libraries Jazz Steps Live at the Libraries presents Sara Dowling Tickets £12. Well-regarded in the UK and touring major jazz festivals in Europe, Sara Dowling’s mastery of the Great American Song Book is coupled with a contemporary edge.
