Summer Reading Challenge Volunteers 2024

Can you spare 12 hours this summer?  Could you encourage children to read?

What is the Summer Reading Challenge?

Each year Inspire Libraries challenge children to read six books over the summer holidays in the Summer Reading Challenge.

We need volunteers aged 14+ years to help run and promote the challenge alongside library staff.

What does a Summer Reading Challenge volunteer do?

  • Shares their own enthusiasm for reading by listening and chatting with children about the books they read on their challenge
  • Explains to children and their parents/carers how the challenge works
  • Joins children to the challenge and encourages them to complete
  • Hands out stickers and rewards as children progress
  • Keeps our challenge records up to date by completing and filing registration cards.

What’s in it for you?

  • Gain experience of working with children
  • Gain new skills and build confidence
  • Meet new people
  • Work as part of a team
  • Receive a certificate for taking part
  • Volunteering shouldn’t leave you out of pocket so we are able to cover reasonable travel costs to and from the libraries
