About this course

Would you like to learn some new cooking techniques, brush up on your maths skills AND leave the lesson with some food cooked for you and your family? If the answer is yes, then this is the course for you.

During each session, in our brand-new custom-built teaching kitchen, you’ll learn how to cook a different recipe from scratch as well as sneaking in a bit of related maths practice. We’ll provide the ingredients and, as the course develops, you will be able to help decide what to cook. All the recipes we use will be plant based but with an option to make them meaty if you’d like.

In our six relaxed and friendly sessions we will make:

  • Soup and topping, with hints and tips for how to vary it to suit your tastes.
  • A pie filling with your choice of crust or topping.
  • Chili and quick cornbread, with heat adjusted for your taste buds.
  • Dahl and chapati with a delicate blend of simple spices.
  • Lasagne, with a few options for adding extra veg to the sauce.
  • Dishes invented to use up any dry ingredients that we have left from previous sessions.

By the end of the course, you will have:

  • Tried six new recipes and learnt how they can be varied to use seasonal ingredients and what you have to hand.
  • Used maths related to weighing and measuring.
  • Learnt how to scale a recipe up or down to feed more or less people.
  • Considered food budgeting and how to make the most of your food money.
  • Compared recipes and meals to the “Eatwell Guide” to ensure that all food groups are included.

Whilst the type of dish we’ll make each week has been planned in advance we’d love to include what you want to make. So if you have ideas for any of the above dishes that you would like to try please bring them along to the first session.
