About this course

Calling all novice bakers!  Join us for a 4-week course aimed at complete beginners to the art of baking.

Working from our brand-new professional kitchens at Inspire Learning Centre, High Pavement, Sutton-in-Ashfield, you will learn how to create a range of savoury and sweet baked goods including quick breads, pastry, biscuits, sponge cakes.

Please note, these cakes will contain gluten, diary and egg, so are not suitable for consumption by vegans or anyone with an ingredient allergy.

From this autumn term course, you could progress onto our spring term Savoury Bakes course, where we will build on our skills to concentrate on making delicious savoury baked goods, or why not try one of our other exciting cookery courses?

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Know the correct flour to use for different recipes.
  • Have an awareness of allergens.
  • Know how to enhance certain recipes by altering/adding ingredients.
  • Have begun to create your own recipe collection.

The tutor will let learners know beforehand what ingredients are required to be brought in prior to Each session.

You will also need to tie back or cover long hair, bring an apron, wear sensible shoes (no flip flops please) and bring something to take your baking home in.

Suggested Reading for the course:

Inspire Libraries hold a wealth of books on baking and cooking.  Take a look next time you are in the library and see if you can spot a great read, such as Easy baking : simple recipes for cakes, biscuits, pies and breads by Linda Collister; Nadiya’s Every Day Baking by Nadiya Hussain or The Hungry Student:Easy Baking by Charlotte Pike.  All these books can be reserved for a small fee in any library or online  at Search, Reserve and Renew | Inspire - Culture, Learning, Libraries (inspireculture.org.uk)
