Women played a significant role in the conflicts known as the British Civil Wars from; fighting and writing, spying and nursing to preaching and pamphleteering. Come and find out about the lives of some of these remarkable women, and the contribution they made, showing, as was said at the time, “A courage beyond their sex”.
Throughout the course, we will explore background information about the civil wars, including the causes and the outcomes. we will also take a themed look at some of the roles women played including well known characters such as Queen Henrietta Maria and Lucy Hutchinson to lesser-known characters like Jane Whorwood and Katherine Liddel. We will examine some of the sources where we obtain the information and consider: Is there likely bias? What audience was it written for? We will finally examine the lives of women, in general, at this time, looking at marriage, childbirth, duties and responsibilities and what were the differences between classes.
