About this course

When you feel happy, sad, anxious or surprised, what’s happening? What are emotions? Why do we have them? How might emotions be mastered? How are emotions displayed? Are emotions and their expressions universal? These are just some of the questions this short course will attempt to answer as some of the psychological theories of emotion are introduced.

This course will focus on emotions and explore if they are universally pre-programmed in our brain and bodies, or if they are constructed?

We will look at the difference between thoughts and feelings and discuss how emotions are experienced consciously and unconsciously, and how each person experiences emotion differently. We will also touch on how people may be able to change or reappraise how they experience emotion.

Informed by different branches of psychology, including neuroscience, you will be able to define what emotion is, understand the difference between logic and emotion, appreciate how emotion influences attention, and look at individual and cultural differences when it comes to how we experience emotion.

You will be able to discuss different theories of emotion, understand the facial feedback hypothesis, and define “mere exposure effect”.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Have your own considered definition of what emotions are.
  • Display knowledge of different theories of emotion.
  • Be aware of the arguments around the universality of emotional expression.
  • Appreciate cultural differences regarding emotion.
  • Understand the facial feedback hypothesis.
  • Explain the “mere exposure effect”.
  • Understand Rational Emotive Behaviour Theory.

Suggested Reading for the course:

  • How Emotions are Made by Lise Feldman-Barrett
  • Emotions Revealed by Paul Ekman
