About this course

Print and Stitch is an ideal course for those who are new to printmaking and embroidery. Or for those with some experience but who want to learn how these two disciplines can be combined. During the course you will learn how to use the lino and collagraph printing processes as the starting point for creating imagery on fabric using pattern, colour and texture, you will then embellish the prints with simple embroidery stitches to add detail.

You will learn and explore how both print and stitch techniques are developed by looking at and discussing other artists’ and embroiderers’ work and by demonstrations, personal experimentation and individual tuition on how to cut and print your lino, how to make and print your collagraph plate and how to use a range of simple stitches creatively to enhance your image.

By the end of the course everyone will have produced good quality work combining both print and stitch to mount and exhibit or to give as gifts.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Be able to discuss how other artists and embroiderers have created their work.
  • Using drawing/tracing to create an initial design based on drawings or photographs.
  • Using textured papers and thread and scribed (scratched) lines to create a collagraph plate.
  • Use markmaking and contrast to produce a lino block.
  • Become familiar with the printmaking and embroidery equipment and learn the correct terminology.
  • Mix and use water soluble inks to print collagraph plates and lino blocks onto a range of fabrics using effective colourways.
  • Use stitch creatively to embellish prints.
