About this course

Learn more about the stories behind famous poems and the poets who wrote them, improving your confidence in reading and enjoying poetry.

What will be covered on the course?

  • We will look at how poets turn ideas and inspiration in to a piece of writing which has stood the test of time, based on 8-10 poems which have become part of our culture. We will explore the lives of those who wrote them and the context of the times in which they lived as well as looking at the techniques (structure, form, metre) the poets used to convey meaning. The style of the course will be a relaxed workshop style with lots of interaction and discussion in a supportive atmosphere

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

By the end of the course learners will have:

  • Learned more about styles and forms of poetry
  • Understood more about rhyme, rhythm , metre and the structure of a poem
  • Be able to analyse and critique a variety of poems and share opinions with confidence
  • Relax and enjoy some old favourites and look at them in a new way
