About this course

Over five sessions, this course will give you the tools and confidence to start writing poems. We will use real life objects and images as prompts for writing and use examples of different types of poems such as haiku to get us started, as well as understanding the techniques that poets use to achieve their effects. This course is aimed at beginners, so no experience is needed.   


By the end of the course, you will:  

  • Demonstrate poetry skills by writing two Spring haiku. 
  • Demonstrate poetry skills by drafting a poem to share with the group.  
  • Demonstrate poetry reading skills by explaining what a poet highlighting tech.
  • Demonstrate poetry skills by using a technique such as simile in a poem.
  • Describe four poetic techniques in class quiz. 
  • Complete the reflective journal and identify next steps in poetry, creative writing or other learning.


Resources required:

None, except English literacy skills and an interest in poetry, plus writing materials.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).  As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
