About this course

Mixed Media painting can add vitality to your work by incorporating a variety of media in a single artwork. The course teaches you new ways of thinking and working with different media.  With practical advice on colour mixing, techniques and exploring composition ideas, learners can develop the necessary skills to approach a painting using mixed media to achieve exciting and dramatic effects in different styles. 

You will be guided step-by-step in order to build your skills and confidence, focusing on subjects like composition and mark-making using rhythm, repetition and intuition: 


  • Selecting appropriate photo references 
  • Analysing examples of mixed-media painting in the work of different artists 
  • Using different tools to create mark-making 
  • Experimenting using different media 
  • Complete different projects in different styles 
  • Varnishing 


You will need:

  • Acrylic paper/sketch pad
  • A4 canvas, 
  • white gesso, 
  • a range of synthetic paint brushes, 
  • photo reference, 
  • metallic palette knife, 
Acrylic paint (student grade):

  • Red (Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red,  
  • Yellow (Lemon and Cadmiun Yellow),  
  • Blue (Ultramarine, and Cerulean),  
  • Magenta , Turquoise, Titanium white  

The art materials are to be discussed during the first session of the course when the tutor will cover the topic.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
