About this course

Each week, you’ll learn different art techniques using a variety of mediums to create a mixed media altered collaged book/journal on the theme of ‘self’. We shall be exploring ways in which to express yourself creatively, building your confidence in drawing, mark making and collage

Over the duration of five weeks, you will be shown how to use a variety of mediums with different art and mixed media techniques. You will be repurposing an old book and turning it into your own art book/journal of texture, colour and imagery, that tells a story about you and who you are. You will become confident with experimenting in collage, mark making and drawing. 


By the end of the course, you will:   

  • be able to demonstrate a range of mixed media techniques. 
  • be able to demonstrate the use of different mediums.  
  • have expressed yourself creatively. 
  • Have a raised awareness of the positive benefits of art and expression for mental health and wellbeing. 
  • have a range of materials to use in your own craft projects, such as collage making, scrapbooking, journalling and card making  
  • plan your next steps as an artist including finding new opportunities to practice and develop your skills. 

Learners should bring:

  • An apron, big shirt or old clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on. 
  • A set of acrylic paints but essentially basic colours yellow, red, blue, black and white. Can be bought from The Range, The Works, B&M, Hobbycraft, Amazon.  
  • A set of different sized paint brushes. Can be bought from The Range, The Works, B&M, Hobbycraft, Amazon.  
  • A pack of baby wipes. 
  • An old hardbacked A5 sized book (from a charity shop). 
  • Some photocopied photographs that relate to you such as - of yourself, your family, your children, your pets, a favourite place for example – can be in colour or black and white and different sizes if possible (upto A5 size – half of an A4 sheet of paper).  
  • Different interesting papers to use such as old magazines, scrap paper, used envelopes, white and coloured tissue paper, packing paper, paper bags, newspaper, book pages, maps, old sewing pattern paper, lined and squared paper – no need to buy anything new, just use what you find around you.  
  • A piece of sandpaper (B&Q, hardware shop, Tesco) 
  • A variety of pens, pencils, coloured pencils and felt tips  
  • Glue sticks

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.
