About this course

Alan Turing is celebrated for his role in the breaking of wartime cyphers, but in his short lifetime he made so many more important breakthroughs in mathematics, computing and even biology. This course will describe Turing’s life and work before and after World War II and the lasting impact that his work had, particularly in the field of computer science. 


What will be covered on the course?    

  • The Turing family and its history 
  • Alan’s formative years at Sherbourne School and Cambridge University 
  • His major breakthrough in the mathematics of logic –The Turing Machine 
  • Postwar work developing the NPL ACE and Manchester “Baby” computers. 
  • “Turing Patterns” – mathematics and biology 
  • The circumstances of his death 

Please note: Turing’s wartime work at Bletchley Park is covered in the companion course “Bletchley Codebreakers” 


What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

  • Knowledge of Turing’s life and contributions to maths, science and computing 
  • basics of simple logic 
  • Understand the operation of the theoretical Turing Machine

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
