About this course

Discover more about Gedling’s history and heritage as the borough turns 50 in 2024.  


On this course you will learn about Gedling through its various parks and nature reserves, pumping stations, and many historic places of interest. If you have an interest in local history then this course is for you. 


The course will cover local industry such as textiles, brewing and mining, and we’ll feature war, rebellion and religion; and important people from the borough will be highlighted, from the worlds of science, art, poetry, sport and more. The areas featured include Arnold, Calverton, Burton Joyce, Carlton, Daybrook, Gedling Village, Lambley, Linby, Netherfield, and Woodborough, plus historic venues like Newstead Abbey and Bestwood Lodge.  


By the end of the course, you will: 

  • Be able to describe Gedling’s early history. 
  • Be able to discuss different industries that have featured prominently in Gedling. 
  • Be able to name three industrialists that greatly influenced areas of Gedling and beyond. 
  • Be able to list several historic venues within the borough and explain their importance. 
  • Be able to name five famous people from Gedling borough. 
  • Contribute to a heritage trail which the class will create during the course.
