About this course

As the blazing days of Autumn lead to the chill of approaching Winter, we reflect on the seasons: what it means in the natural world as it prepares to rest, and what it means to us. Especially when Christmas is just around the corner.

In this short 3-session course, we will take time out and use some famous (and not so famous) examples of seasonal poetry to get us writing our own poetry. This course aims to help you record what you notice and want to remember about this time.

The course is suitable for beginners, but those with some poetry experience are welcome also.

Course Summary

  • Using others’ poems as inspiration for your own
  • Following existing poems’ structures to build your own
  • Using images and memories to ignite ideas for poems
  • Using your five senses to write
  • Recognising the clues in the shape of a poem – thinking about poetic form

By the end of the course, you will:-

  • Demonstrate poetry skills by writing two seasonal haiku.
  • Demonstrate poetry skills by drafting a poem to share with the group.
  • Describe features of three poetic forms in class quiz.
  • Complete the reflective journal and identify next steps in poetry, creative writing or other learning
