About this course

This course is suitable for adults aged 19+ years that wish to gain a qualification to help them progress in their education and/or career.


Successful completion of the course will lead to a GCSE English Language qualification with Edexcel. 

Entry Requirements: Level 1 Functional Skills English or completion of an initial assessment showing you are working at this level or higher.


This course will be delivered over 31 weeks.


The course will be taught mainly online but one lesson each month, including the first session on 10th September will be held at Stapleford Learning Centre and Library in order for you complete written tasks and speaking and listening exercises with the group and your tutor.  The final exam will take place on Friday 6th June 2025 in Sutton In Ashfield.


This course will allow you to draw upon a range of texts as reading stimulus and engage with creative as well as real and relevant contexts. You will have opportunities to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills that encourage genuine enquiry into different topics and themes.


The course will teach you to be able to demonstrate a confident control of Standard English and write grammatically correct sentences, deploying figurative language and analysing texts.

GCSE English Language course contents includes developing skills to;

  • read fluently, and with good understanding, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature and literary non-fiction as well as other writing such as reviews and journalism
  • read and evaluate texts critically and make comparisons between texts
  • summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts
  • use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing
  • write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately
  • use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately
  • acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively.

The texts used include literature and extended literary non-fiction, and other writing such as essays, reviews and journalism (both printed and online). 


Please complete the booking enquiry on this page which will send you an enrolment form to complete via email.   Your application will then be checked to confirm you qualify for a funded place on the course and do not already hold an English GCSE at grade C / Level 4.


You will then be asked to complete an online English initial assessment by 23rd August and we will contact you to discuss the outcome of this. You will be offered a place on the course if you are


As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  The link for you to join the live sessions will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
