About this course

The garden painting course for Beginners guides you through the process of painting with acrylics to create a colourful, vibrant and unique composition. The tutor will help you offering instruction and demonstration on how to use colour, texture and perspective to achieve a painterly, Impressionistic style. With practical advice on colour mixing, techniques and exploring composition ideas, learners can develop the necessary skills to approach a painting using acrylic paint to achieve exciting and dramatic effects.

You will be guided step-by-step in order to build your skills and confidence, focusing on subjects like sketching, painting principles and colour mixing. On the course, we will cover:

  • Artist research: Haidee Jo Summers and David Curtis
  • How to sketch and draw a composition
  • Simplify and separate tonal values into areas of light and shadow,
  • How to use contrast, warm and cool colours effectively
  • How to mix and balance naturalistic greens creating a subtle acrylic palette and a realistic sense of sunlight hitting the leaves and petals.
  • Painting techniques: dry brush, layering, flat brush, gradient, glazing, visual colour mixing

Learners will know how to achieve depth and perspective as well as how to paint the light and shadows that create form, to sketch, to draw and how to mix and apply the paint on the surface using different tools to create an impressionistic style of painting in acrylics.
