About this course

Give your flower paintings texture; learn how to paint leaves, stems, branches and petals, as well as how to paint the light and shadows that create depth and dimension in your acrylic painting. : 

  • Select appropriate photo references 
  • Analyse examples of winter paintings in the work of different artists 
  • Use different tools to create mark-making 
  • Colour mixing: saturated versus non saturated colours 
  • Sketching  
  • Painting technique 

The course will guide you through the process of creating an Impressionistic floral still life painting in acrylics, recreating the colour palettes of nature from start to finish. You will learn a painterly, impressionistic style by using your palette knife and various brushstrokes. The course guides you through the process of creating an expressive compositions in acrylics. The course will help you to become more confident using acrylics, with tuition provided through a mixture of demonstrations and exercises according to your needs. 


The course is suitable for beginners. 

By the end of this course, learners will be taught how to simplify and separate tonal values into areas of light and shadow, how to use warm and cool colours effectively and how to mix and balance naturalistic greens creating a subtle acrylic palette and a realistic sense of sunlight hitting the leaves and petals, using the palette knife and become more confident in using acrylics. 


Resources required by attendees:

  • Acrylic paper/sketch pad, A4 canvas, white gesso, a range of synthetic paint brushes, photo reference, metallic palette knife, acrylic paint (student grade) 
  • Red (Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red,  
  • Yellow (Lemon and Cadmiun Yellow),  
  • Blue (Ultramarine, and Cerulean),  
  • Magenta , Turquoise, Titanium white 

The art materials are to be discussed during the first session of the course when the tutor will cover the topic.
