About this course

Do you wonder why people behave the way they do? How our minds evolved? Why we crave fats and sugars? Why we fear snakes and enjoy gossip? Evolutionary Psychology, a combination of evolutionary biology and cognitive psychology, may provide the answers.

Applying modern Darwinism to psychology and human behaviour, you will discover how our complex minds have evolved by a process of natural selection, and why we are designed to face the problems faced by our ancestors. The course will look at areas such as parent-offspring conflict, criminal behaviour, language, mate selection and the benefits and costs of human brain evolution. Expect illustrated presentations, video and discussion as we explore how nature and nurture combine to influence behaviour.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Define what Evolutionary Psychology is.
  • Name two pioneers of Evolutionary Psychology.
  • Describe the environment in which early humans evolved.
  • Explain the term mismatch.
  • Give an example of a mind module.
  • Discuss why humans brain are relatively large.

Suggested Reading for the course:

  • Introducing Evolutionary Psychology: A Graphic Guide by Dylan Evans and Oscar Zarate
