About this course

The purpose of this face-to-face qualification is to allow learners to demonstrate an understanding of and competency in the essential digital skills they need for life. It will enable learners to engage with digital services and products in everyday life.

Course Content

  • Being safe and responsible online and on digital devices:
  • You’ll gain knowledge and skills in using multiple authentications, understanding a range of data threats and being physically and psychologically safe when using digital devices.
  • Using digital devices and handling information:
  • This section includes tips for improving search techniques plus managing and storing information on digital devices.
  • Creating and editing:
  • You’ll learn how to create, edit, and enhance digital media and how to design documents and spreadsheets in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Digital communication:
  • Topics covered in this section include how to send emails and instant messages, and how best to use, and engage with forums and online collaboration tools.
  • Transacting digitally:
  • This key section includes how to shop safely online as well as how to complete online digital tasks, such as online banking, accessing government services, and booking events/entertainment.

Who is it suitable for?

This qualification is suitable for learners +19

To get the best out of the course, before you start, you will need to be able to:

  • start and log onto a computer*
  • have an email address which you can readily access*
  • be able to use a keyboard to type a couple of lines of information*

*If you need to improve these basic skills first - you could join the short 3-week courses, ‘Learn key computer skills’ or ‘Get more out of your smartphone’


How is it assessed?

  • An exam will be taken on the final week of the course to gain the accredited qualification in EDSQ.

What related qualifications can you progress to?

  • Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to Level 1 Essential Digital Skills or a Level 2 ICT qualification.

What employment could it led to?

  • From applying for a job to booking an online appointment, having a good foundation of digital skills is becoming increasingly essential for both work and our everyday lives.
  • By improving your digital skills, you could unlock new job opportunities and boost your confidence in using digital devices.

What is distance learning?

  • Our flexible, online programmes will support you to learn new skills and gain qualifications through computer-based learning, at times and locations to suit you.
  • Choose from Employability Skills level 2, Essential Digital Skills or Functional Skills in Maths, English and IT up to level 2.

Booking your place and fee information

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

  • Complete the EVENTBRITE BOOKING.
  • Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

You should be redirected to the Inspire Online Enrolment Form after completing the Eventbrite booking.  If you are not redirected, please use the link supplied in the Eventbrite booking confirmation email.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
