About this course

Learn to use innovative painting exercises and unconventional tools to discover new possibilities for your landscape painting. This extended course ensures you stretch your techniques; experiment in your approach and discover a variety of methods and techniques to increase enjoyment of landscape painting in a semi-abstract style. This course is designed for beginners or more experimented learners. 


The emphasis of the course is to focus on editing, colour balance, tone and composition. Explore process: techniques of mark making with complementary and monochromatic colour palette to achieve interesting visual effects:  


- Selecting appropriate photo references 

- Analysing examples of contemporary still life painting 

- Prepare the surface to receive the painting 

- Sketch the composition on paper and canvas 

- Work with complementary colours 

- Varnishing 


Resources required:

  • Acrylic or watercolour paper
  • White acrylic gesso
  • 30 x 40cm stretched canvass
  • Photo references
  • Metallic palette knife
  • Acrylic paint (student grade) 
  • Glycerin*
  • Spray bottle
  • Synthetic Brushes
  • Apron
  • Baby Wipes
  • Cotton Rags
Acrylic Paint:
  • Red (Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red
  • Yellow (Lemon and Cadmiun Yellow)  
  • Blue (Ultramarine, and Cerulean)
  • Magenta, Turquoise, Titanium White

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).  As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
