About this course

Discover the poet Lord Byron’s connections to Nottinghamshire.

We will explore why, as a boy, he first came to Nottingham, and look at his strong links with Newstead, Annesley, Southwell, Newark and Hucknall. This course will take learners on a virtual tour of the locations in Nottinghamshire associated with Lord Byron. Gain a knowledge of Lord Byron’s life and how his time in Nottinghamshire shaped him.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Be able to name different places associated with Lord Byron.
  • Be able to discuss the poet’s formative period in Nottingham and Notts and how it might have influenced him.
  • Be able to describe why Newstead Abbey was so important to Byron.
  • Be able to express an opinion on Byron as a person, and on his reputation.
  • Be able to compare the different locations in terms of their influence on Byron and his poetry.
  • Be able to identify different locations and their association with Byron (from images alone).
