About this course

The Art Personal Projects course will give you the opportunity to explore an area of personal interest to you, using the three themes of Landscape, Cityscape and Still-life as a starting point for developing your own ideas and practical work.  Some experience of drawing and painting is useful, but not essential. We will be building on your existing skills using a range of traditional and innovative approaches to painting and drawing.

On the course you will initially be given prepared visual source material to work from, but you will be encouraged to begin to select your own subject matter to aid the generation of your own personal response. To begin with we will explore a range of different painting, drawing and mixed media techniques to develop your understanding of your chosen theme and subject matter and then you will have the freedom to work on your own initiative with 1-1 tutor guidance.

The first couple of sessions will focus on identifying your own personal direction within your chosen theme through an exploration of formal elements such as line, tone, texture, pattern, form and colour, which should act as a spring board for you to start your own creative investigation and will act as a stepping stone to each consecutive sessions activities.

Each stage of your personal project will be supported by discussions of artists’ work that links to individual themes, practical demonstrations, personal experimentation and individual tuition.

By the end of the course everyone will have explored and gained confidence in their own ability to generate and create work independently.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss how other artists have explored the themes of Landscape, cityscape and still-life creatively.
  • Generate ideas linked to a theme.
  • Use formal elements creatively in own work to explore a theme or subject matter.
  • Set individual targets linked to a theme or subject matter.
  • Produce a range of creative imagery linked to a chosen theme or subject matter.
  • Use art and design language confidently to describe or explain your own work.
