Learn techniques to identify and monitor Ancient trees in the landscape. Increase your understanding of trees, both from a cultural and ecological perspective. Please note, these are non consecutive sessions. Session 1 takes place on 12th February at Dynamo House, Bestwood Country Park; Session 2 takes place on 12th March at Spa Pond Woods, Forest Town, Mansfield
This course is programmed as part of the Greenwood Community Forest Project.
Course Summary:
Ancient trees, despite some protection, are disappearing from our countryside. The Ancient Tree forum encourages us to record the gems that we still have, to compile a national database of these historical and ecological important species.
The Ancient Tree Forum seeks to secure the long-term future of these ecosystems through promoting best management and conservation practice, lobbying governments over their recognition and protection, encouraging research, and increasing people’s enjoyment of old trees.
We will go through the process of recording Ancient trees, in order that the learner will gain the skills and confidence to undertake surveying, within their own locality
You will be aware of the rationale behind the creation of our Ancient Tree register and learn techniques that will assist the Tree Forum, in their quest.
Learning Outcomes - By the end of the course, you will:
• Know what an ancient tree is
• Know what a veteran tree is.
• Know how to survey and record Ancient trees
• Be able to list 3 animal species, associated with Ancient trees.
• Be able to state 1 reason why Ancient and veteran trees are important.
