Newark Library to reopen in July after closing for essential maintenance work

Published 8th July 2024

Newark Library is set to reopen on Thursday 25th July 2024, after it closed in January to complete essential maintenance works to its heating and cooling systems.

The maintenance works will help keep the library temperatures regulated in the colder and hotter months, making the library a more comfortable experience for both customers and staff.

The new reopening date follows a delay after the library was subject to vandalism. Planned works were on schedule to be completed earlier this year before the library suffered damage to windows and the building.

Inspire, who operate libraries in Nottinghamshire, Nottinghamshire County Council and their contractors have worked to quickly repair the damage and are happy to announce the reopening of the library, which has been missed in the Newark community. The library will also be hosting a Family Fun Day on Saturday 17 August, with details to be announced soon.

Peter Gaw, CEO of Inspire, said: “We are delighted to open our doors again with a much-improved environment for our users. The timing of the opening means we can welcome children and families taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge which runs until Sunday 1 September.  In August we launch a new season of events and Adult Learning ready for the autumn and look forward to welcoming audiences, participants, and learners back to the library!”

As well as free access to books, public PCs and facilities including printing and photocopying, Newark Library also has a range of Adult and Family Learning courses to help the community boost their skills and develop new hobbies. In August, a new programme of arts and culture events for all ages begins, including an author visit from Laura Howell, an Artist and Author Workshop as part of the Summer Reading Challenge, and heritage events including Exploring Local Maps.

During the planned closure, library customers were able to access regular groups at Inspire’s residency at the Buttermarket in Newark town centre, and continue using the library service at Balderton Library, who operated extended opening hours. The Buttermarket will return to usual operating hours after Saturday 6 July, and Balderton Library will return to usual operating hours after Friday 12  July.
