According to a recent study released by the Suffolk Libraries charity, which provides library services across Suffolk, the public library system has been found to deliver significant social benefits to people per pound of funding. The research shows that for every £1 invested in library services and activities, there is a social return on investment of £6.07. Libraries are playing a vital impact on the lives of people in the county, with the study confirming millions of pounds of savings each year for the public and various organisations.
The report categorises library services into six distinct areas, all of which are also provided by Inspire in Nottinghamshire; groups and activities, lending of resources, guidance, information, and signposting, access to ICT, provision of space and hosted services, talks, performances, events and friendship groups and volunteering. Funded by Nottinghamshire County Council at an annual cost of approximately £7.5 million, Inspire’s library service is estimated to have a social value of around £45.5 million across Nottinghamshire, based on the research commissioned by Suffolk. Many of the library services identified in Suffolk’s report are delivered across the county of Nottinghamshire. In addition to the services listed in the report, Inspire also provide adult learning opportunities and a rich arts and cultural programme for local residents.
Peter Gaw, Chief Executive Officer of Inspire, commented; “The research undertaken by our colleagues in Suffolk provides evidence on the value of what we do, value that we have known about for a long time, but now we have a method of stating it in financial terms. The report highlights the value in each activity area putting a cost and financial value against each outcome. This includes improved mental health, increased skills and knowledge, improved confidence, feelings of ownership, pride, commitment, and motivation. Also, things like reduced isolation, connection to community all feature in the report”.
Councillor John Cottee, Cabinet Member for Communities commented; “I have been an advocate for our libraries for many years, as I often get to see and hear the fantastic things we offer across the county. This report says to funders and other services interested in wellbeing, health, skills, and community development that working with and investing in our libraries can deliver your outcomes. If a bank were able to offer you £6.07 for every £1 you saved, you would be queuing up to make an investment”.
