"My role as volunteer for the Summer Reading Challenge is based in my local library in Beeston. It involves encouraging children aged 4-11 to read six books over the summer holidays. I explain to the children how the challenge works and liaise with parents/guardians about the benefits of the challenge. Every year a theme is set and incentives like stickers and bookmarks are given out. I also log how many books the children have read and ask what they thought about the books they read. Some children give a lot of details about their books and this is encouraging to see.
I am aware that some children may not have access to books and this is one way of getting them involved. It is a community venture and anyone can get involved.
I enjoy giving back to the community and particularly to the library as I have been using libraries from a young age. You get to meet new people, share your passion and see the enjoyment your volunteering brings to other people and the difference it makes to their lives. Volunteering gives me the chance to use my skills and empower other people to achieve what they want too.
What would I say to someone who is thinking of volunteering with Inspire? My answer would be go for it!"
