28th July marks the 40th Anniversary of the opening of Mansfield Central Library by Queen Elizabeth II.
In her Silver Jubilee year, Queen Elizabeth II visited Mansfield with Prince Philip and officially opened the new library. The need for a bigger library lead to the opening of the new £1m ‘showpiece’ library in the new Four seasons Shopping Centre. It was the first library in Nottinghamshire to have a computerised book issuing system.
The royal visit was an occasion of great excitement and drew massive crowds.
The Queen, and her husband Prince Philip, officially opened the new public library, and then went on a walkabout along Westgate before signing the visitors book in the Town Hall.
To celebrate the anniversary there is a display in Mansfield Central Library.
