The 10th Anniversary Year of the Brilliant Book Award was certainly a bumper year, full of exciting events and celebrations.
We started the year with a fantastic launch event at Mansfield Library on 1 December 2016, attended by pupils from Nottinghamshire, Nottingham City and Derbyshire.
Kim Slater winner of the 2016 Award with her book ‘Smart’ was presented with her Award. Nottingham author and previous winner Paul Rawsthorne inspired the young people with her presentation.
The 10th Anniversary Shortlist was announced and the reading began in earnest.
The Shortlist this year was very strong:
Longbow Girl -Linda Davies
The Many worlds of Albie Bright – Christopher Edge
The Black Lotus – Kieran Fanning
The Defender of the Realm – Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler
How to Look After a Lost Dog -Ann.M.Martin
Car-Jacked – Ali Sparkes
Author events with Ali Sparkes, Christopher Edge, Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler were held in Six schools and events attended by a total of 16 schools.
‘A Book in a Jar Competition’ was held, and many fantastic entries received. The competition was won by Matilda Bowley from Fernwood with her ‘Jar’ for Car- Jacked and the Tweet, ‘ Action, thrill packed journey. One of the best books I’ve ever read. Right up my street #Car-Jacked for Life!’
There was a fantastic turn out for the final vote, and it was tense at ELS while the counting was completed.
On the day of the announcement a Brilliant Book Award Quiz was held at The Beckett school, attended by 7 others schools. A fantastic time was had by all and the winning team came from Rushcliffe School.
Prizes for both the ‘Book in a Jar Competition’ and the Quiz were kindly donated by our partner for the award, The Bookcase at Lowdham and Inspire.
The 10th Anniversary Year also saw the launch of our new website.
