Adventures in Music is a magical musical journey for children aged 2-5 and their families. The sessions use rhythm, music and movement to develop children's language skills, spark their imagination and build their confidence in exploring and making music. Between 2018 and 2023, the Adventures in Music programme was supported by funding from Arts Council England, as part of our National Portfolio Organisation early years work.
Each course runs for 10 weeks (one session per week), at 12 Inspire libraries and was repeated 3 times each year (usually May, September, and January) with a different theme each week - including; pirates, fairies, a mermaid city and a monster mountain - allowing children to clap, stamp, shake, dance and sing. During the Covid pandemic, online sessions took place via Zoom with families joining in the fun from their living rooms
Here's what some of our participants had to say:
"My daughter has loved learning the songs and sings them at home for the rest of the week"
"Excellent sessions. My daughter looked forward to it every week!"
Music and movement activities enable children to improve self-expression, hand-eye coordination, physical activity and learn new concepts in a fun and engaging way.
Individual Adventures in Music resource bags were available to help adults and children continue the music adventure at home, practicing skills learnt in the library sessions.
When in-person sessions weren't possible, resource bags were posted to participants who joined in via Zoom in 2020/21.
Children had the chance to develop and practice a range of musical skills. Each child received an Adventures in Music passport (pictured below), and collected stamps for every fun skill learned!
During 2020, when Covid prevented in person events, the Inspire Music team created a series of Adventures in Music Online videos. This series of taster videos were for families to continue to enjoy Adventures in Music at home and to give an idea as to what the sessions are like. You can watch them all by clicking this link.
I enjoyed watching some of the children visibly grow in confidence during the sessions and socialise with others and was able to easily identify those who attended regularly because they stood out in terms of attention, engagement and ability.
