Unity

A collaboration that brings together a broad range  of Nottinghamshire's young musicians and performers to write, record and perform a large scale ensemble piece that features a range of musical genres and abilities.

Unity 2016 was an original composed piece written by young musicians in response to the Paris terror attacks of late 2015.

Angus McLeod & Mark Allsop acted as the composers/facilitators, and assisted by Sam Jones & Bru-C, worked with a group of young people on developing the ideas and sections for the piece, and worked it into a finished structure in November / December, ready for the various groups to work on it during Jan / Feb 2016, adding and embellishing sections with their own interpretations within the score.

The pre-creation session took place at the Old Library. Most of the other sessions then took place at the group’s own locations. The final rehearsals brings it all together at the Old Library.

The groups/performer’s tackle different elements and parts of the piece – there was a lot of scope for ‘stretching’ sections and re-arranging parts.

The whole piece was gradually assembled over the sessions and then rehearsed together as a whole before the performances. Recorded & performed at the Palace Theatre, Mansfield as part of Showcase 2016.
